Police have ramped up their search for the second of two escaped New York inmates after one was killed

Authorities have ramped up their search for one of two escaped New York prison inmates on the run since mid-June.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo spoke about the ongoing manhunt in a press conference Friday night, where he confirmed that Richard Matt, 49, had indeed been killed by a US Customs and Border Protection agent after the fugitive tried to steal a vehicle Friday afternoon.

New York State Police say there's no evidence Matt and Sweat were together at the time.

New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D'Amico says there has so far been no sighting of Sweat, despite multiple media reports late Friday evening that Sweat was surrounded by police.

Much of the search has centered on rural upstate New York, where officials have said they believed the escapees would try to cross the border into Canada.

Clinton County Sheriff's officials say more than 1,000 officers are in on the hunt for Sweat.
