It pays — literally — to commute in California.

Commuters in the Golden State are feeling the biggest burden on their wallets compared to any other state in the US, as a new survey found a number of California cities to be the most costly on commuters' budget.

LendingTree compared data from the 100 largest cities in the US, finding that Fremont, Calf. suffocated commuters' bank accounts, costing them $12,801 worth of their time annually, or about $49 per workday.

The rankings were compiled using three metrics: median earnings for full-time workers, mean hours worked per week, and mean commute time. The data comes from the Census Bureau from 2017.

San Francisco ranked second on the list with the average worker spending $11,719 annually in commuting, followed by Arlington, VA, Irvine, CA, and New York, NY.

The longest commute is …

Workers commuting in New York spend an average of 42 minutes one way, according to the survey.

It didn't get much better for commuters in the Tri-state area. Commuters in Jersey City, NJ ranked second, averaging 36.5 minutes for one way commuters, while Newark, NJ commuters had a 35-minute commute.

Chicago ranked fourth with commuters spending just under 35 minutes commuting one way before a slew of California cities — Fremont, Oakland, and San Francisco — all had commute times more than 33 minutes one way.

It pays to commute in Texas

Texas is a friendly state to commute in.

Three of the least expensive cities to commute in are in the Lone Star state, with Lubbock, TX being dubbed the most friendly on commuters' finances.

Lubbock commuters spend just $11 daily on their commutes, amounting to $2,736 annually, while workers in Laredo, TX and Corpus Christi, TX spend $12 and $13, respectively.

Fremont, San Francisco, and Irvine cost commuters more than $41 daily on their commute, according to the survey.
